Groupthink

Today in class I was able to air some of the questions I had about the poetry readings especially for Emily Dickinson because her poem was from the most different time period. Specifically I asked about.... "An imitiation of a Light That has so little Oil-" *Which referred to a different time period all together when is was common to use oil lamps, whereas today we might refer to electricity as an imitation light.* "That hurt them early - such a lapse Could give them any Balm" *I was very confused by this sentence but I understood the shift from recovery to the cause, how did it transition though. Michelle explained that the transition came from the healing process of this line. Balm is the scab which allows for recovery.* "Death - is but one - and comes but once - And only nails the eyes" *I thought this refered to the dead whose eyes are closed at burial; however, Michelle pointed out that it may hit right between the eyes as a certain cau

TP-CASST  I am analyzing I measure every Grief I meet by Emily Dickinson under the TP-CASST style. Both the poem and the grid have been marked up on paper and will be available through scan tomorrow. The reason I have decided not to post my analysis is because I am not totally confident about it and I really want to check with my group's point of view before publication on my blog. Thanks for understanding! And as a P.S. I chose to use the TP-CASST style because for the AP text we will have a limited amount of time to analyze so I want to use something that I can remember for wholesome analysis for the exam. 

7th poem reading

The first reading is slow and without meter. Many times there are words you read over and literary techniques you miss. The second, third, and fourth then are practice for meter and a closer look at the literary techniques used. The fifth and sixth are to be read aloud to yourself as a audible lesson and check on the meter. The seventh should be read by a friend for peer assessment of the passage, ask them what they thought was most noticeable as a reader. I am not sure if this was the purpose of the assignment but I hope that this explains how I felt after reading the poverty seven times.

Brave New World: Chapter 7

Lenina is walking around with Bernard in the reservation with their Indian guide (who apparently stinks) During this trek Lenina is continually complaining not unlike how she did at the North Pole, in the way that she doesn't like anything about this New Mexican Reservation "Cleanliness is next to Fordliness"- quick pun she said through conditioning There is a long description of an old man, which Lenina is repulsed by, we learn that people in the State don't age past 30. Brave New World: Chapter 6

Lenina starts this chapter by discussing the pros and cons of going with Bernard instead of Benito (who is going to the North Pole) Henry who is then with Lenina makes a reference to Bernard being similar to a rhinoceros and explains why he is allowed by the Director allowed him to continue living in the state (works well and seemingly harmless) Then we are with Bernard and Lenina out deciding what they want to do on their date - Lenina wants to be in a crowd with lots of noise - Bernard is being 'weird' because of his wanting to be alone with Lenina Weirdness continues by his stating that he wants see the moon and stars with her alone. Lit Terms Applied

Today was a really different experience. Not to say that it is good or bad, but instead that it was extremely challenging. I personally wasn't able to read one slide completely in the time allowed and this made it difficult to make any general assessment of the Lit Terms used. Instead of deep analysis whatever I read was used to inform my decisions on what Lit Terms were used therefore this was an incomplete assessment of the text on my part. From this experience I don't know how to feel about this testing method quite yet in relation to the AP Exam this coming May and hopefully I can improve my speed reading for now create a more comprehensive understanding of the text in a shorter amount of time. What really confused me was that each time I looked up a different screen showed different words distracting me from that train of thought. The name Benito Hoover, every time I look at it from a historical perspective I think of President Hoover who abandoned the people during the Great Depression. (Allusion?) In the spirit of Huxely, I decided to change course at the beginning of this week since I was unable to finish my Literature Analysis book I had originally started reading. First Quarter Review

a) From starting the AP Bootcamp and being the one only to participate I feel that there hasn't been a lot of success thus far, however I am hopeful that as the AP exam creeps forward more people will join. I have reached the goals I have set for myself and been working on my Best Friend Project with Michelle by writing a narrative of how I pictured our last four years. b) This quarter I hope to have at least 5 more people join the club and continue to work on attaning a 4 on this English exam. That goal will be attained if I have to cut off a limb and sell it to the black market! I am gonna do it!!! c) I am still thinking about how I could incorporate what I am doing with Writinga5pectatorsport and I am going to follow suit with Michelle with the blog posts to compete with Josh.

Bernardo Gonzalez - The essay is unfinished and is cut off in the middle of the second paragraph,  however we can see where he was going with the establishment of the feelings in the introduction  Next time a more detailed pre-write maybe could help in order to start and finish without leaving so much unsaid. Iliana Gutierez - Very detailed pre-write which I could only dream of producing. However I could not find the essay whether I am having technical difficulties I can only hope that it will soon be resolved. Pablo Nicasio - The essay didn't really relate to the prompt directly and there were only two paragraphs, so better luck next time. Michelle Crosby - I feel so proud of Michelle because she has always told me that she has a really hard time with in-class essays and this time she demonstrated real analysis of the material and related it to the prompt well. The essay was great and I can see she really enjoyed what she was writing, but maybe next time she wants to do

I AM HERE

Maybe... Today my great-grandmother passed away and I am still unsure about how I feel. But concerning the course I have been making great progress towards my SMART goals by starting up the AP bootcamp. The program is still small, but all in good time. So far we have written an essay and this next Friday we are going to do 12-15 multiple choice questions from a released Collegeboad exam. This is my saying I am still here and kicking.

The time of my life

Sorry this took so long! It was Dads birthday so we have been spending time with family this weekend. But back to the assignment, this Friday I have decided how my first week of boot camp should go! Monday is an introduction and suggested readings from some textbooks I am using and Friday is going to be a really quick quiz of a certain poem with released questions from the collegeboard. I read though some materials and discussed my plan with Michelle. I hope we can go to the library to get our next literary analysis book! ;)

Literary Analysis Remix: A Thousand Splendid Suns

The phrase “a thousand splendid suns,” from the poem by Saib-e-Tabrizi, is quoted twice in the novel – once as Laila’s family prepares to leave Kabul, and again when she decides to return there from Pakistan. It is also echoed in one of the final lines: “Miriam is in Laila’s own heart, where she shines with the bursting radiance of a thousand suns.” Discuss the thematic significance of this phrase. ~ Much of this novel talks about the nature of humans and the strong emotions we can feel for others (good and bad individuals). Goes over the production and Dickens perspective in correspondence with 'current events' that impacted his writing   There is a lot of reading by the Professor to the class quoting the book After the starts to explain what some of the perspectives from Dickens's  peers of the age Character development and allusions to other books/pieces written (by Dickens) So the background of Charles Dickens is an explanation to the audience about the later 'journals' written and was hard because of blockages in his 'creative process'. Talks about his experiences in London/Paris and how his 'disturbing' experiences impacted his writing during that time. What's the Story?

One of the strongest human drives seems to be a desire for power. Write an essay in which you discuss how a character in a novel or a drama struggles to free himself or herself from the power of others or seeks to gain power over others. Be sure to demonstrate in your essay how the author uses this power struggle to enhance the meaning of the work. I chose to us Great Expectations and Jane Eyre... I will read both in the next month! Now Charles Dickens wrote Great Expectations because he had some reason to do so... It was during the time of the Industrial Revolution so maybe it was to create some comic relief to a great period of mass manipulation by the powerful.
