Brave New World: Chapter 6

  • Lenina starts this chapter by discussing the pros and cons of going with Bernard instead of Benito (who is going to the North Pole)
  • Henry who is then with Lenina makes a reference to Bernard being similar to a rhinoceros and explains why he is allowed by the Director allowed him to continue living in the state (works well and seemingly harmless)
  • Then we are with Bernard and Lenina out deciding what they want to do on their date - Lenina wants to be in a crowd with lots of noise - Bernard is being 'weird' because of his wanting to be alone with Lenina
  • Weirdness continues by his stating that he wants see the moon and stars with her alone. Later states that they are like children who cannot wait for gratification (which he was hoping could be after the first date and instead they did some soma/nasty)
  • Much of their interactions were between the conflict of Bernard and the conditioning of Lenina who keep reciting the hypnopeadia.
  • Part 2- Bernard goes to see the Director in order to be allowed for travel to the New Mexican Reservation
  • Here we see into the story behind the man (Director) went to the reservation with a girl whom he seemed to be emotionally tied to because after she was lost he still remembers her in his dreams fearful for her safely (all said to Bernard who is later threatened to be sent to work in Iceland, of which he is excited)
  • This is all related to Helmholtz who said he hated these "deplorable habits". He disliked them because he liked Bernard.
  • Part 3 - Then they travel to the reservation timed out at 40 seconds late, they meet Warden of the Reservation who explains the details of the place before they go.
  • The Warden explains that these savages are similar to people of this age where they give birth, get married, have religious beliefs, and die of diseases. (population unknown to the state)
  • Bernard finds out that the Director is looking for his replacement in London, at this time he takes a lot of soma and becomes more agreeable
  • Both Lenina and Bernard are taken to the reservation and informed that there will be a dance later which one of the savages will come by to escort them
